DAUMILLER COLLECTION
BY RAINER DAUMILLER
REINTRODUCING CLASSICS OF 1970S DANISH DESIGN
STRAIGHTFORWARD MATERIALITY
Of all the furniture created by German-born designer Rainer Daumiller, the Daumiller Armchair and Side Chair is perhaps those that best expresses his values and approach as a designer.
Solid in construction, simple in form, and sculptural in expression, its straightforward materiality and robust composition pay tribute to Daumiller’s lifelong affinity with nature.
FARMHOUSE AESTHETIC
Having reintroduced the world to Rainer Daumiller’s iconic 1970s armchair in 2022, GUBI and the revered designer have joined forces once more, expanding the collection with an ingenious new side chair design. Combining the timeless rustic looks for which Daumiller’s work is known with advanced ergonomic features, the Daumiller Side Chair offers a blend of comfort, functionality, and sculptural aesthetics, embodying both tradition and modern practicality.
MADE TO LAST
Launched at a time when awareness of sustainable forestry was widening, and tapping into a growing appreciation for alternatives to less renewable woods, the pine armchair became a bestseller in the late 70s. Chunky in appearance but light in weight, the chair’s frame is crafted from FSC®-certified solid pine (FSC®-C176589) from replanted forests, chosen for its faster growth rate and CO2-storage potential, and other controlled materials.

“I do not perceive the chair as ‘design', but as a logical result of good materials and good craftsmanship, made with today's tools, to meet the ergonomic and aesthetic requirements I expect of a good chair.”

ENGAGING VISUAL TEXTURE
Another benefit of pine is that, although the chair has a chunky, heavyweight appearance, it is relatively light. As a wood, pine has an engaging visual texture, thanks to the interplay of light and dark veins running through it and the knots scattered across the surface, giving each Daumiller Chair a personality of its own.
TWO EXPRESSIONS
The Daumiller Collection is available in either golden pine or with a brown/black-stained finish. While the golden edition emphasizes the natural pattern of the wood, imbuing the chair with a rustic farmhouse feel, the brown/black stain gives the chair a stronger silhouette and a cleaner-lined, more graphical expression, without compromising materiality.
RAINER DAUMILLER
Whatever the material, Rainer Daumiller has always demonstrated an acute understanding of his medium. His ability to ‘listen to materials’ mean that his designs were always inspired by the inherent characteristics of what they were made from. His most celebrated works, including the Daumiller Armchair, were in natural materials, and could almost be described as collaborations with nature, rather than the singular visions of an individual designer.
