GRÄSHOPPA COLLECTION

BY GRETA M. GROSSMAN

The global appreciation for 1970s aesthetics.

THE GRÄSHOPPA COLLECTION

The Gräshoppa Floor Lamp is one of the most wellknown designs by pioneering Swedish furniture designer, interior designer and architect, Greta Magnusson Grossman (1906–1999). With a tubular steel tripod base on a backward diagonal slant, its unmistakable silhouette gives the impression of a grasshopper clinging to a blade of grass.

Part of a collection designed in 1947, the floor lamp has an organic dynamism that was a breath of fresh air within the gravitas of mid-century modernism.

TIMELESS ELEGANCE

The Gräshoppa Table Lamp remains as contemporary as ever with its elegant and playful aesthetic. This lamp features a unique, elongated conical shade that pairs seamlessly with a tubular brass stand, showcasing Grossman's whimsical yet modern design sensibilities. Perfectly functional for a desk and equally suited as a sophisticated lighting element in any room, the Gräshoppa Table Lamp blends organic form with a modern touch.

A HISTORIC VISION RECREATED

GUBI’s new iteration of the Gräshoppa Table Lamp introduces a canvas shade to the design, staying true to Grossman’s pioneering spirit while adding fresh style and character.

Drawing from an image of a prototype developed between 1939 and 1941, GUBI’s design team has brought the concept to life with meticulous attention to detail. At the heart of this new edition is a handmade natural canvas lampshade with an elongated form compared to the slightly rounded conical steel shade of the existing edition.

A TIMELESS TRIBUTE

Possessing a character all of its own, yet slipping seamlessly into the Gräshoppa lighting family, the Gräshoppa Table Lamp with canvas shade is a timeless tribute to the design genius of Greta M. Grossman – the realization of a historic prototype, adapted for the 21st century.

          GRETA M. GROSSMAN

Greta M. Grossman (1906–1999) was an innovator in the male-dominated worlds of mid-century industrial and interior design and architecture, gaining international recognition for her work.

She was born and educated in Sweden, setting up Studio – her first combined store and workshop – in Stockholm the same year she married musician Billy Grossman. With the onset of the Second World War, the pair emigrated to California where she worked as an architect. She was among the first to bring the Scandinavian modern aesthetic to southern California’s burgeoning modernist scene.
