GUBI goes al fresco with
Josephine Skriver
Before flames swept through the Pacific Palisades, top model Josephine Skriver and her husband, musician Alexander DeLeon, had crafted a sanctuary perched between mountains and sea—a place that married Danish minimalism with Californian ease. Though the home no longer stands, its spirit lives on in the memories, design choices, and alfresco ideals the couple brought to life. This is the story of a house that once was—and what made it a home.
AT HOME WITH JOSEPHINE SKRIVER
"Moving from Copenhagen to the US was a big change. I never envisioned living in Los Angeles, but that home gave me a real a sense of belonging. I aimed to bring some of my style and ‘hygge’ to California. I didn’t want to hear cars honking and look at buildings and chaos all day, so my goal was to find something that was remote enough to offer some serenity but close enough to get to my jobs."
"Our view was very French/Amalfi Coast-esque view between two mountains, through a canyon, at the sea. Waking up and hearing the birds and seeing the ocean when I get out of bed was transformative. As a human, it’s important to be connected to your surroundings. Indoor/outdoor living is what makes Los Angeles Los Angeles."
WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE MAKES A HOUSE A HOME?
“Firstly, creating memories with people that you love. Beyond that, surrounding yourself with furniture and art that speaks to you, inspires you, and reminds you of what makes you feel alive. From every color and texture to every object or artwork, every decision big and small makes your home yours. Someone else with the same canvas would make different choices. That’s what makes us human – our individual taste and selectiveness.”
"The interior of our home was Japandi/Scandinavian with a touch of brutalism. Growing up in Copenhagen, I wanted to add some Danish flair, as well as some Japanese influence, as it’s always so calming and peaceful."
"In our bar room, when the doors were open, it was almost as though our backyard was combined with the inside of our home, and it just became one large space. You could feel the ocean breeze in the air and not be separated by walls. This is where we got together to laugh, have drinks, watch sports, play games, and enjoy each other’s company."
“The Paavo Tynell Floor Lamp with the Pierre Frey fabric is super fun, and we have been introducing a little color and funk to our style and taste so it felt like the perfect addition to bring a little life to our master bedroom.”
“Other cool pieces nodded to Alexander’s rock ’n’ roll background and brought some edginess.” In his GUBI office, a Fender Jaguar guitar hung on the wall behind the Epic Coffee Table and Unbound Floor Lamp by Space Copenhagen for Gubi.
“I wanted to make sure that Aurora’s nursery had a lot of light and a lot of personal touches that brought joy to both her and our family. We based the room on of the two aspects of her name: the Northern Lights and Sleeping Beauty, and the character Aurora. Designing her room was so fun!”
"I am in love with our Pacha Outdoor Sofas and Chairs. We spent so much time on the terrace enjoying sunsets with friends and family. GUBI has this really special way of creating pieces that are very different and have their own personalities, yet all somehow tie together. It’s really cool to be able to curate pieces that lend themselves to each individual room and space."
