Violin Dining Chair Fully Upholstered

$1,999

Light, fresh and elegant, the characterful and comfortable Violin Chair from Danish-Italian duo GamFratesi resonates with bold creativity with pure craftsmanship. Like its musical namesake, the Violin Chair’s design is a harmonious duet of form and function. Two parallel lines extending from the backrest echo the strings of a violin, while also providing essential support. Elegant flourishes of detail, such as the gentle curves where the lines meet the horizontal bar, give the chair a refined but unmistakable character, where the classical counterpoints the contemporary. The gently tapering, powder-coated steel legs support a generous seat and an embracing half-arm backrest, designed such that the chair may be used both as a dining chair or an armchair, without compromising on comfort in either setting.

HAND IN HAND WITH SUPERIOR CRAFTSMANSHIP

The result is a new typology for the GUBI Collection: an understated half-arm dining chair that epitomizes GamFratesi’s craftsmanship, creativity, and material understanding, with enough poetry to make the piece feel fresh, light, and contemporary.

THE PERFECT HYBRID OF DINING CHAIR AND ARMCHAIR

The elegantly tapered legs of the powder-coated steel frame support a generous rounded seat and an embracing backrest that extends to partially support the forearm, elbow, or hands as an occasional armrest. It allows you to easily twist around to speak to the person sitting next to you at dinner, while still remaining comfortable long after dessert and coffee are served.

THE DESIGN PROCESS

In designing the Violin Chair, GamFratesi set out to distill the archetypal form of a chair into its purest representation, without losing the sense of character for which they have become renowned.

The name references the two parallel lines that extend from the backrest to a horizontal bar below the seat, evoking two parallel strings on a violin. It was these two lines, in the form of two pencil marks on the very earliest sketch, that provided the initial spark of inspiration for the design. The musicality of the name resonates with a chair that reflects a musical instrument in its geometry, symmetry, and craftsmanship.

GAMFRATESI

GamFratesi has been working with GUBI since the inception of their studio and the development of the Beetle Chair. With their own dual heritage, Italian Enrico Fratesi and Danish Stine Gam share GUBI’s ability to synthesize seemingly opposing ideas – the classic and the contemporary, the intellectual and the sensual, the understated and the expressive, the manufactured and the unique. These juxtapositions, as well as the boldness and curiosity that drives their desire to find inspiration in unfamiliar territory, are epitomized in the Beetle.
