GRACE LOUNGE CHAIR
BY TOVE KINDT LARSEN
The flexibility of rattan – its ability to be bent and shaped at will – is at the heart of
Tove Kindt-Larsen’s vision for the Grace Chair.
BALANCE OF ELEGANCE AND INFORMALITY
The Grace Lounge Chair is an elegant take on an informal typology - the rattan lounge chair. Woven by hand from the natural material by Indonesian craftspeople, the curvilinear, organic frame holds an indulgently deep seat cushion and a loose back pillow for added comfort.
ADAPTS TO THE CONTOURS OF THE BODY
The rattan flexes under the weight of the sitter, adding another layer of support as it adapts to the contours of the body. The result is a daring balance of elegance and informality, resulting in a piece that will make a bold statement as it casts playful shadows across any interior space while welcoming those who regularly curl up inside it like an old friend.
It's natural robustness helps ensure that the chair has longevity – this coupled with the care that goes into its craftsmanship means that the Grace Chair might survive for a century or more.
Bringing to life a design never before put into production, GUBI has worked closely with Tove Kindt-Larsen’s family to develop the piece from a conceptual sketch she drew in 1936, which was recently discovered in an archived folder of her jewelry designs.
CRAFTED FROM NATURAL RATTAN
The frame of the chair is entirely crafted by hand from rattan with its ‘skin’ left intact. It is steamed to make it more pliable and then coaxed into shape, before being held in a jig as it cools. The woven ‘skirt’ around the seat cushion adds strength and stability and then nothing more than natural bindings made from the rattan’s skin and a few screws are added to hold everything in place.

TOVE KINDT-LARSEN
Tove Kindt-Larsen (1906-1994) was one of the first female designers to emerge during Denmark’s ‘Golden Era’ in the mid-twentieth century. She is well-known for working with her husband, Edvard Kindt-Larsen (1901- 1982), but her own influence should not be underestimated. Building on the popularity of her Grace Lounge Chair in rattan, which GUBI developed in 2022 from a sketch Kindt-Larsen made almost a century earlier in 1936, GUBI’s new edition takes her landmark design into new territory.
