GUBI SETS THE AMBIENCE

Before a room has color, texture or furniture, it has light. The way a lamp releases that light decides what we notice, where we gather and how long we stay. This season, GUBI's lighting icons set the ambience in four ways: diffused, ambient, directed and sculptural.

DIFFUSED

Diffused light passes through a material and comes out changed: slower, warmer, without an edge. The bulb disappears, and what remains is a volume of light with a surface of textile or canvas. The lamp stops being a source and becomes a presence in the room, made to be looked at as much as to see by.

AMBIENT

Ambient light rises off walls and ceilings, settles into corners and holds a room together without showing where it comes from. There is no single bright point to follow but a general warmth that lets the eye rest. It is the base note of a space: the light a conversation happens in, and the light that makes a room feel lived in.

DIRECTED

Directed light falls in a pool on a page, a plate or a chair, and lets everything around it recede into shadow. That contrast gives a room its focus, and because the direction can change, so can the room. Turn the arm or tilt the shade, and the centre of attention moves with it.

SCULPTURAL

Instead of one fixed effect, the lamp offers several shapes of light in the space. The same lamp can wash a ceiling, pool on a table or cast an asymmetric glow across a wall. The form of the lamp and the form of its light become one design.
