KARENA NG’s SHANGHAI SANCTUARY

Hidden beneath the bustle and noise of Shanghai, a quiet garden and open air home sit in quiet calm. Hong Kong screen star Karena Ng shaped this reprieve entirely around light, and the result carries something faintly southern European, unhurried and quietly sun-warmed.

She rearranged almost all of the original planting, layering lavender, rosemary, and olive trees with low-saturation flowers in white, purple, and grey-green. "A garden that's too neat makes me feel less at home." Nothing here has been manicured into submission, and that is exactly the point. Teak tables and woven cord settle into the landscape, rattan weathering gently under an open sky, ready for a lunch that drifts into evening.

Inside, the house follows the garden's lead. Low furniture, soft textiles, and slowly moving sunlight keep it breathing at a natural pace, until one space becomes the next. As Karena describes it, calm arrives the moment you walk through the door.
