A celebration of portugal's merchants
In 1841, Queen Maria II gifted the site of the former Convent of São Francisco to local merchants, who spent the next 70 years building a Stock Exchange that stands as a bold testament to the power and ambition of Portugal's merchant class.
A revolving cast of stonemasons, painters, tilers, and carvers left their mark across decades, all grounded in Porto's signature granite, with a vast courtyard that once served as a convent cloister now crowned by sweeping iron and glass. These materials carry a storied past through every hall, now home to GUBI pieces that bring layered histories of their own.
