Helsinki’s Hidden Gem
The largest hotel in the Nordics when it opened in 1952, Hotel Vaakuna occupies the top five floors of Helsinki's Sokos department store. Architect Erkki Huttunen's functionalist façade gives way to something more romantic inside, largely thanks to Paavo Tynell, who custom-designed the property's light fixtures throughout.
Hotel Vaakuna houses one of the most extensive surviving collections of Tynell's work. Golden brass sconces, hand-perforated to cast a beautiful play of light, share the space with cascading glass-lantern chandeliers, clusters of brass bells, and delicate snowflake and flower details crafted from brass wire.
