GRÄSHOPPA LAMP

BY GRETA M. GROSSMAN

New 2021 color - Olive Brown

Modernist style and classic elegance

The collection also includes the Gräshoppa Table Lamp; the rotating shade of which echoes the floor lamp’s ability to direct light where needed. Completing the collection, the Gräshoppa Pendant also features the same elongated conical shade design, bringing a modernist style and classic elegance to any kitchen counter or dining table.

“The Gräshoppa Floor Lamp is one of my favorite Grossman designs – with a few simple strokes, she effortlessly evokes the lamp’s namesake insect, making the lamp seem almost alive and bringing a sense of movement and character into the room."

An organic profile

The Gräshoppa Floor Lamp is one of Grossman’s most well-known designs. With a tubular steel tripod base on a backward diagonal slant, its unmistakable silhouette gives the impression of a grasshopper clinging to a blade of grass. Part of a collection designed in 1947, the floor lamp has an organic profile that was a breath of fresh air within the gravitas of mid-century modernism.

Organic sense of personality

An iconic design first conceived in 1940’s california, the Gräshoppa Collection is now sought after by design aficionados the world over, demonstrating the longevity of its appeal. Evoking the form of its namesake insect clinging to a blade of grass, the Gräshoppa Floor Lamp set the standard for the rest of the collection, which brought an organic sense of dynamism and personality to the gravitas of midcentury design.

“The fact that she is relatively unknown just makes the process for GUBI more interesting, as we have an honest opportunity to continue to convey Greta M. Grossman’s designs. Grossman was known in her time in both Sweden and California, USA. However, she ended up largely unknown and almost forgotten. I am very happy that we can give this magnificent female designer a second comeback.”

GRETA M. GROSSMAN

Greta M. Grossman (1906–1999) was an innovator in the male-dominated worlds of mid-century industrial and interior design and architecture, gaining international recognition for her work.

She was born and educated in Sweden, setting up Studio – her first combined store and workshop – in Stockholm the same year she married musician Billy Grossman. With the onset of the Second World War, the pair emigrated to California where she worked as an architect. She was among the first to bring the Scandinavian modern aesthetic to southern California’s burgeoning modernist scene.
